 Teutopolis, St. Anthony To Meet For Sectional Title, South Central Baseball Season Ends

TEUTOPOLIS — There will be an area team playing in the Class 2A Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday because both local teams advanced from Wednesday play at the Class 2A Teutopolis Sectional.

Teutopolis opened the evening with a 7-4 victory over Breese Central although the Lancers struck quickly in the first inning.

Breese Central tallied three runs to move ahead in the opening frame. Benny Lehman was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed over by Conlan Haar. Dan Kohrman drew a walk and Bryce Wieter had a sacrifice that scored a run. Alex Athmer then tripled home a run.

The Wooden Shoes immediately retaliated with four runs to move into a 4-3 lead in the second.

Henry Thompson led off the inning with a single. With one out, Aiden Niemerg drew a walk. Dawson Hoene then followed with an RBI single. Mick Niebrugge singled home two runs.

Breese Central tied the score in the bottom of the second. Craig Schroeder drew a walk and was sacrificed over by Preston Baker. After the second out was registered, Haar singled home the run.

T-town then moved ahead 5-4 in the third. Carter Hoene singled to start the frame and Thompson had a sacrifice to move Hoene over. With two outs, Niemerg then hit a single that scored Hoene.

The lead went to 6-4 in the fourth as Worman drew a walk and Niebrugge followed with a double. A passed ball scored Worman.

The final run of the contest came in the sixth. With two outs on the board, Niebrugge and Kreke had back-to-back singles. Austin Borries drew a walk to load the bases and Hoene then drew a walk to score the run.

Worman went six innings, giving up four runs on three hits, three walks and striking out one. Borries came on to finish the final inning, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out one. T-town improved to 27-5 for the spring.

In the second contest, Effingham St. Anthony banged out 12 hits and claimed a 7-3 victory over Columbia.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 3-1 lead in the second inning then scored two runs in the third and fourth each.

Alex Mayer led off the second inning run by drawing a walk. He took second on a wild pitch and third on another wild pitch. With one out, Vincent Vogel drew a walk and stole second. Will Fearday then singled both runners home. Fearday stole second base. B. Fearday singled with two outs. The Bulldogs moved into a 3-0 lead.

Columbia came back with a run in the bottom of the second as Brady Heminghaus singled and Sully Bonaldi drew a walk. A fielder’s choice put Andrew Colyer on base. A sacrifice fly scored the run by Micah James.

In the third, St. Anthony tallied two more runs. Brent led off the frame with a double. With one out, Mayer drew a second walk. Spour then followed with a single that scored both runs as the Bulldogs held a 5-1 lead.

St. Anthony tallied two more in the fourth. With one out, Hatton got his second single of the contest. B. Fearday then followed with a home run and the lead went to 7-1.

Columbia rallied in the sixth. Will Kleinschmidt drew a walk and Logan Bosch singled. Heminghaus then doubled home a run and a ground out by Andrew Colyer produced the second run. But the Bulldogs got out of the frame with a fly ball out.

Lauritzen then put the side down in order in the seventh as he struck out the first two batters then got the third out on a grounder to end the game.

B Fearday was on a roll offensively with two singles, a home run and two RBI. W. Fearday added a single, double and two RBI. Hatton added two singles and an RBI, Brent had a double and Spour a single and two RBI.

Hatton started the contest on the hill for St. Anthony and went five innings, giving up three runs on five hits, five walks and striking out five. Lauritzen came on for the final two innings.

Teutopolis and St. Anthony will now meet for the sectional championship at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner then advances to the Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday at 7 p.m. to face the winner of the DuQuoin Sectional, either DuQuoin or West Frankfort. Those two teams play for the sectional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday at DuQuoin.

At Altamont

South Central’s season came to a close in the Class 1A Altamont Sectional Wednesday.

The Cougars were held to four hits as they dropped a contest to Pawnee by a 4-0 tally.

Pawnee scored in the top of fourth and had a three-run fifth inning.

The Cougars had four hits led by Trevan Sidwell with two singles. Colton Smith and Maddox Robb had a single each.

Pawnee picked up its third straight victory moving its record to 22-13.

The Indians will now face Casey-Westfield at 11 a.m. Saturday for the sectional championship. Casey-Westfield defeated Nokomis 13-5 in the opening game of the Altamont Sectional.
