 Hearts Win Class 3A Salem Baseball Regional Opener

SALEM — Effingham High School handled Charleston by a 9-1 count in the Hearts opening game in the Class 3A Salem Baseball Regional Wednesday.

EHS got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Jude Traub grounded out and Max Flack singled down the left field line, each scoring a run.

Four more EHS runs crossed the plate in the third inning to extend the lead to 6-0. Wyatt Hayes hit a solo home run to right field while Brayden Tucker doubled, scoring a run and Max Seachrist singled, scoring two runs.

Colton Webb homered to right field, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and EHS finished out with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Charleston scored its lone run in the sixth.

Carter Braddy picked up the victory on the mound. He gave up one run on two hits, two walks and struck out four.

Effingham finished with nine hits in the contest led by Webb with a home run and two RBI, Hayes with a solo homer, Braddy with two doubles, Tucker with a single, double and an RBI, Flack with two singles and an RBI and Seachrist with a single and an RBI.

Charleston’s two singles were by Burk Anderson and Alex Matheny. Luke Bonnstetter suffered the pitching loss. He went 3.1 innings allowing three runs on three hits, one walk and striking out three as he came on in the third inning in relief.

Today’s game will feature Mattoon against Salem at 4:30 p.m.

Effingham will meet the winner of that contest at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional championship.
