Centralia defeated Effingham 5-4 in high school baseball action Saturday while the Hearts came back with a 13-2 win on Monday over Centralia in regular season play.
In the Saturday contest, Effingham fell to Centralia by a 5-4 count on the final play of the game. Centralia was down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Gabe Houser singled, scoring two runs.
The Hearts lost despite outhitting Centralia 5-4. Carter Braddy led the way with a single and double. Andrew Wagoner added a double and Colton Webb had two RBI. Wyatt Hayes had a single and an RBI.
In the Monday contest, the Hearts tallied a 13-2 victory.
Braddy continued on with his hot hitting as he collected three in four at-bats. He finished with a single, two doubles and two RBI. Brayden Tucker had a home run and two RBI. Brody Boehm finished with a single, double and an RBI. Wagoner added a double and two RBI. Hayes finished with two singles and two RBI, Max Seachrist had a single and two RBI and Max Flack a single and an RBI. Max Seachrist added a single and two RBI.
Wade Bushur was the winning pitcher. He tossed 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks.
The Hearts are back in action Wednesday at the Class 3A Salem Regional. EHS will take on Charleston, a winner in game one over Olney Monday by a 6-0 count. The Hearts will meet the Trojans at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday while Mattoon takes on Salem Thursday. Those two winners then advance to the regional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday.
