Effingham St. Anthony clinched the City Baseball Series Saturday with an 8-2 win over Effingham.
The Hearts won the opener 3-2 Wednesday before St. Anthony tied with a 5-2 victory Thursday. The Friday contest was rained out and pushed to Saturday.
EHS jumped out to 1-0 first inning lead. Andrew Wagoner drew a walk to start the frame but was taken out on a fielder’s choice as Carter Braddy hit a grounder. Braddy then stole second and third. Colton Webb reached base when he was hit by a pitch and stole second. Braddy came home on a fielder’s choice ball hit by Jude Traub.
That lead stood at 1-0 until the fourth when the Hearts tacked on another run as Max Flack hit a solo shot.
But that’s all the scoring the Hearts would do.
Here came St. Anthony. The Bulldogs broke loose with four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.
In the sixth, Vincent Vogel started the rally with a single with one out. With two out, Brady Hatton singled and Brock Fearday drew a walk to load the bases. Aiden Lauritzen drew a walk that scored Vogel. Henry Brent followed with a walk that scored another run and then Sam Link slapped out a bases loaded single up the middle. The second baseman tossed to the shortstop but the throw handcuffed him and two runs scored.
The Bulldogs finished out the seventh with four more runs. Charley Spour led off the frame with a single. Then the Bulldogs produced the four runs with two outs. Hatton singled home a run followed by a double off the bat of B. Fearday and a home run by Lauritzen.
The Bulldogs had seven hits in the contest led by Lauritzen with a home run and three RBI, Hatton with three singles and an RBI, B. Fearday with a double and an RBI and Link with a single and an RBI.
Joseph Tegeler earned the win on the mound. The reliever did not give up a run, allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two over 2 2/3 innings.
Effingham was led by Flack with a solo homer, Tucker with a single and double and Traub with a single and an RBI.
