George Edward Shirley, 78, of rural Dieterich, Illinois went to his eternal home surrounded by his family on March 30, 2026.
George was a devoted Christian, a true man of God. He was a faithful member of Christ’s Church of Effingham, Illinois. He would rise early, before everyone else, spending time listening
to gospel music and reading his bible. He loved to write the words of the gospel music as he listened, taking the words to heart. Hard work was his love language. He worked with his hands right up to the very end. He used his hands to serve as Jesus did. George was a big believer of lending a helping hand when needed. George’s missionary work was being active with Habitat for Humanity building a home in West Virginia. He had assisted with New Orleans after Katrina, he had been to Mexico numerous times building houses and churches for those in need. George was also a member of The Prairie Crossroads Chapter of The Studebaker Drivers Club. His love of Studebaker cars was second only to his faith and family.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years; Mary Kathryn and 5 children; Karla, wife Margie; Melody, husband Tad; Karol, husband Johnny; Aaron wife Dee Dee; and Miranda, husband Tyler. 9 Grandchildren: Jonathan, Jessica, Heather, Jordan, Ian, Nathan, Ruthie, Sarah, Caden and 8 Great Grandchildren. George is also survived by his sister Gail Leturno and brother Dale Shirley.
Preceded in death by his parents; Clifford and Frankie Shirley, sister Twila Brown and brother Kelly Shirley.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ’s Church of Effingham, Illinois on April 3, 2026, at 4pm, with visitation from 2 to 4pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in George’s name to Christ’s Church of Effingham, Illinois or the Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.
