Betty Lou Higgs (89) of Greenup

Betty Lou Higgs, 89, of Greenup, Illinois passed away at 7:37 pm on January 31, 2026, at Heartland Nursing Home in Casey, IL.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday February 5, 2026, at the Barkley Funeral Chapel, Greenup, ll. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm noon until service time, prior to the funeral. The burial will be in the Harmony Cemetery, rural Greenup.

Betty was born in Cumberland County, Il on August 27, 1936, to Lewis and Ida (Brownfield) Cutright. She married Ellis Lee Higgs on December 6, 1958, by the justice of the peace in Cumberland County.

Survivors include her children Charlene (Jack) Greuel of Macomb, IL, Bill (Teresa) Higgs of Charleston, IL, Randall (Jodi) Higgs of Greenup, IL., Nina (Steve) Tolliver of Louisville, IL; grandchildren Joel (Katie) Hammond of Elm Springs, AR, Derek (Jayme) Hammond of Austin, TX., Amy Higgs of Charleston, IL., Travis (Danielle) Higgs of Charleston, IL., Troy Higgs of Charleston, S.C., Thor Tolliver (Cas Sparling) of Altamont, IL., Sabrina Medley of Louisville, IL; and great grandchildren Zander and Ava Hammond, Sullivan (Sully) and Crosby Hammond, Taryn Higgs, Gabriel and Sophie Tolliver, Jonathan and Ellie Medley.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband and a great grandson, Creo Higgs, three sisters Edna McElravy, Norma Kemper, and Nina Danforth and two brothers Joe Cutright and Bill Cutright.

Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a homemaker and had worked part time jobs including reading meters for Coles Moultrie, a kitchen aide at Cumberland Elementary School and as a home care aide for Addus, where she retired at the age of 82. Her hobbies were playing cards, going to church, and going to the hootenanny. She never met a stranger and was a loving and kind person to anyone who knew her.
