Dorotha M. Rhodes, 88, of Vandalia, IL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at SBL Fayette County Hospital.
A Graveside Service & Interment will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Spring Hill Cemetery, Beecher City with Rev. Dennis Warner officiating. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Northside Christian Church, where Dorotha was a devout and faithful member. Online condolences can be expressed at www.hohltandfilefh.com
Dorotha Marie Childress was born on October 20, 1937, in Loudon Township, the youngest of ten children to Jesse and LaVada (Wright) Childress. On October 22, 1955, she married the love of her life, Darold Carl Rhodes. Together, they were blessed with two children and shared seventy wonderful years of marriage.
Over the years, Dorotha dedicated herself to many roles. She began her career at the toy factory and Sheepskin, later worked in the dietary department for the St. Elmo school district, supported numerous area businesses as a secretary, and, in her later years, was part of the team at FAYCO Enterprises Inc.
Above all, Dorotha’s faith guided her life. She was known for her friendly and loving personality. She found joy in solving puzzles and, when able, traveling with her husband. Her greatest happiness came from time spent with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Dorotha was also a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Rhodes is survived by her husband, Darold Rhodes of Vandalia; son, Carl Rhodes and wife Frances of Taylorville; daughter, Sharon Koonce and husband Denny of Marine; grandchildren, Nathan (Paige) Rhodes of Taylorville, Michele (Jeremy) Orsborn of Nokomis, Racheal Ehrhardt of Nokomis, Andy (Halli) Koonce of Edwardsville, Calvin (Nicole) Koonce of St. Louis; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 5 brothers; and 4 sisters.
