James A. “Jim” Phillips (87) of Deltona, FL, Formerly of Neoga

James “Jim” A. Phillips, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Deltona, Florida, on August 2, 2025. Formerly of Neoga, Illinois, Jim leaves behind a lifetime of jokes, stories, and cherished memories.

Jim was born on October 9, 1937, in Coles County, Illinois, the son of Alvin L. Phillips and Elsie L. O’Dell Phillips. He married Donna “Lynn” Lane on September 10, 1961, and they shared many wonderful years together until her passing on November 10, 2004. On October 30, 2009, he married Geneva Katherine “Kay” Hamlin Phillips, and together they spent their later years in Deltona, Florida.

Jim is survived by his wife, Kay; his daughter, Cynthia Mettendorf, and son-in-law, Donald Mettendorf of Sanford, Florida; five stepchildren; thirteen step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his first wife, Lynn, Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

Jim proudly served in the U.S. Army as a medic. In 1967, he began his career with Blaw-Knox Construction, where he worked until his retirement in 1999.

Known for his quick wit and boundless kindness, Jim lived life to the fullest and always found a reason to laugh. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a friend to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his many nicknames, endless storytelling, and the joy he brought to every gathering.

As per Jim’s wishes cremation rites were accorded and a graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 10, 2025 in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery in Neoga, Illinois with Military Honors by the Neoga American Legion. The Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home of Neoga, Illinois is assisting the family with arrangements.
