Richard E. “Dick” Horner age 73 of Newton went home to be with Jesus on August 8, 2025, at Willowbrook Memory Care Center in Effingham, Illinois. Dick was born December 29, 1951, in Lincoln, Illinois the son of Frank “Bud” and Mildred (Skaggs) Horner.

Services for Dick will be held at Meyer Funeral Home in Newton on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM with a visitation from 9:00 until service time. Burial will follow at Trexler Cemetery in rural Jasper County.

Dick was the epitome of a true livestock man and spent the majority of his life raising, showing, and judging livestock; a love he passed on to the next generation. He graduated from Western Illinois University with a degree in Agriculture Science in 1974.  Dick’s career included 38 years as an Agent and Agency Manager with Country Financial Insurance. He also worked in sales with Premier Swine.

He married Susan Schafer in 1974 and to that union were born three children Julie, Brad, and Brent. In 2001 Dick married Brenda (Marshall) Worthey. Dick leaves behind his wife Brenda and family Julie (Kevin) Roberts, Brad (Sarah) Horner, and Brent (Michael) Horner and Amy (Travis) Tarr. His love for his grandchildren was unmatched.  He will be deeply missed by Alexis (Griffen) Sanders, Reagan Roberts (special friend Deytin), Rubin Roberts, Cole Horner, Maddox Horner, Maverik Horner, Marshall (Taryn) Tarr, Meyer (special friend Laney) Tarr, and Marlee Tarr.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, and brother Don Horner.

We would like to extend our greatest appreciation to the special staff at Willowbrook Memory Care and the Transitions hospice care team.

It is our wish to continue to honor Dick’s passion for youth in livestock. With this, we have established a memorial fund in his memory to provide scholarships and awards at various shows and judging contests.
