Herb was born on December 29, 1932 in rural Stewardson, the son of Noah E. and Beryl C. (Huffmaster) Tabbert. He married Betty Miller on February 25, 1968 and they shared nearly 50 years together. Betty preceded him in death on January 9, 2018. Herb worked on the family farm for several years before and after serving our country in the US Army from 1952-1955. He spent 18 months during the Korean War stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He then worked at Fedders/Norge from 1959-2005 as a Forklift operator. Herb enjoyed playing pinochle and visiting with friends and family. He loved going to auctions where it was joked that he was the best customer the auctioneer never made a dime off of, as he didn’t even bother to get a number… he just enjoyed seeing what items sold for and visiting with people. Herb also spent nearly every Tuesday at the sale barn in Shelbyville. He liked attending various events at the Effingham County Fair each year. Herb continued to mow his own grass even at age 92 and for many others through the years. He enjoyed visiting with neighbors and watching his grandson’s sporting events.

Herb is survived by his son, Darren (Jackie) Tabbert of Effingham; daughter, Valerie (Brian) Wright of Florence, Kentucky; two grandsons, Kendall Tabbert and Kolten Tabbert of Effingham; sister, Alma Perry of Mattoon, IL; and sisters-in-law, Myrna Hites of Edgewood, Glenda Poehler of Ingraham, and Ruth Ann Miller of Altamont. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Otha (Thelma) Tabbert, Noah Junior Tabbert, Max D. (Nina) Tabbert, and Maurice (Amelia) Tabbert; sisters, Margaret Tabbert, Ellinere Tabbert, Gail (Dale) Rincker, and Wanda Lee Tabbert; in-laws, Kenneth Perry, Janice and Duane Poehler, Howard Poehler, Ronnie Miller, Floyd Miller, and Dan Hites.
