Mabel Mae Cowger, age 91, of Ingraham, Illinois passed away peacefully at 1:35 pm Saturday, May 24, 2025 at the Axiom Healthcare of Flora.
Mabel was born on August 7, 1933, the daughter of Elijah J. and Orie (Bryant) Kepley on the family farm near Ingraham. After high school Mabel worked for the Farm Bureau in Newton, then had worked many various jobs over the years that included working at the Kennedy Elevator in Ingraham as a secretary and H & R Block in Effingham.
Mabel married Rondle Allan Cowger on February 12, 1955 and they shared 69 years together before he preceded her in death on January 12, 2024. Mabel was a dedicated partner on the farm, working alongside her husband to nurture their land and livestock. Known for her exceptional culinary skills, she delighted her family with her cooking and baking. Beyond her work on the farm, Mabel shared her passion for quilting with her granddaughters, imparting valuable life lessons while teaching them this cherished craft. Her talents extended to crocheting as well, showcasing her creativity and commitment to handcrafted artistry.
Mabel found joy in tending to her garden and was particularly fond of watching the birds, with cardinals holding a special place in her heart. She embraced the beauty of nature, often spending time outdoors to observe and appreciate the world around her.
Mabel is survived by a son: Gordon (Vickey) Cowger of Teutopolis; daughter: Laural (Brett) Ackerman of Newton; daughter-in-law: Glenda Cowger of Wheeler; grandchildren: Darlene Coffin, Jacque Cowger, Jacob Cowger, Brittany Ackerman, Reid Ackerman, and Tia Cowger; great grandchildren: Jonathan Coffin, Sarah Coffin, Rachel Coffin, Grant Ackerman, Meredith Ackerman, and Blake Ackerman. She is also survived by a sister: Mayme Burk of Effingham; and many nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; a son: Stephen Cowger; great-grandson: Mitchell Coffin; siblings: Grace Mullins, Noma Mullins, Leone Kepley, Lowell Kepley, and Nolan Kepley.
A memorial graveside service will be held to celebrate Mabel’s life at 1:00 pm, Monday, June 2, 2025, at the Ingraham Cemetery with Keith Kepley officiating. Everyone attending the services are asked to meet at the cemetery just prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mabel’s memory to Clay County Hospice.
