State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) served as keynote speaker at the annual Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day (IGOLD) Wednesday where he urged attendees to keep fighting for their Constitutional Rights.
“The people who want to undermine the Second Amendment are not interested in the safety of our communities – if they were they would support the rights of honest citizens to protect themselves,” Niemerg said. “Instead, they want to make it easier for criminals to terrorize our neighborhoods and they want to make it harder and harder for us as society to put these violent offenders behind bars where they belong. Here in Illinois, we know what responsible gun ownership looks like. From the hunters and sportsmen of southern Illinois, to the small business owners and homeowners in our cities and suburbs — countless citizens exercise this right safely and lawfully every day. Yet time and again, we see sweeping restrictions proposed that threaten to punish the law-abiding while doing little to deter the lawless.”
Niemerg said everyone wants safer communities but attacking honest citizens and stripping away their Constitutional rights is not the solution.
“We must focus our efforts on holding violent offenders accountable,” Niemerg said. “Disarming responsible citizens will not make our communities safer. In fact, it does the opposite. We must not forget that the right to self-defense is foundational to our freedom. We cannot and must not waver in our opposition to the efforts to eliminate our Constitutional right to bear arms.”
State Representative Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) also spoke at Wednesday’s event.
Wilhour said, “We know the 2nd Amendment is one of the most important protections on a government that is completely out of control.”
