A vehicle crashed into the Odd Fellow Rebekah Home in Mattoon late Friday morning. One resident of the home was killed, while another was critically injured.
The names of the residents had not been released as of early Friday evening. An 82-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the crash, which occurred at 11:28am. An 86-year-old woman was flown from the scene to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where she was listed in critical condition. Mattoon Fire and Police Department members extricated both women from the room.
A SUV ran off Lafayette Avenue East and came to rest inside the north wall of the building. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, 54-year-old Curtis A. Meadows, was listed as alert and responsive. Mattoon police arrested Meadows for suspicion of Aggravated DUI.
Mattoon Police and Fire were assisted in the incident by Lake Land Police Department, Charleston Fire Department, Coles County Sheriff’s Office, and the Coles County Coroner’s Office. Illinois State Police were working to reconstruct the crash scene.
