Former Illinois Governor George Ryan died this (FRIDAY) morning at 91 – the day after going into hospice care.

Capitol News Illinois reports Ryan, a Republican, served as governor from 1999 to 2003 after decades in Illinois politics.

Ryan later served six years in prison and on home confinement and spent the last years of his life writing and promoting a book on his decision to halt Illinois’ death penalty law.

Ryan’s criminal conviction stemmed from his years as secretary of state, where he oversaw a scheme in which unqualified truck drivers received their commercial licenses through bribes.
