The Effingham County Board’s Administrative Committee Monday reviewed opioid funding and its availability to those wanting to get off the drug.

Sheriff Paul Kuhns acknowledged funding, but said, “We have more people who want to kick opioid use than ever before.”

On another front, there was discussion on how to oppose use of Kratom and HO2. The City of Effingham has enacted legislation to oppose the drugs, but unincorporated areas of the county and other communities in Effingham County are another matter. There was discussion of a webinar in August on how to battle promotion of tobacco.

In the wake of the tornado that hammered Effingham County on June 17, board member Norbert Soltwedel…whose farm was hit hard…asked what can be done to help those whose dwellings were affected. Soltwedel said people are looking for dwellings.

Committee members heard from Effingham County Fair Board President Phil Hartke, who requested $7,500 in funding for the fair. Hartke spoke about a Mobile Museum that will reflect on America’s 250th anniversary.

The committee also recommended salaries for the county sheriff and the public defender for the coming term, and discussed a Disaster Response Grant, as well as the list of election judges for the next term.
