Members of the Teutopolis community gathered Tuesday evening for tours of their grade school building, then huddled to brainstorm on how to make the building better.
The Teutopolis district earlier made improvements to the high school building and now are in the process of enlarging the junior high building to allow the relocation of sixth grade classes there from the grade school.
Teutopolis Superintendent Matt Sturgeon said the grade school was built by St. Francis Parish in 1954 and has been expanded, but the last significant expansion was in 1980. Tour groups saw a need for additional restrooms and plumbing to allow more facilities, as well as more room to accommodate students with various special needs.
Sturgeon said the information gathered from the public Tuesday will be put into a document that will go to the school board as they consider how to proceed. He said to those gathered, “What could education be in Teutopolis? You see what it is, but what could it be?”
In the meantime, there are presentations on the Teutopolis district website such as “Sharing the Pride and Purpose” and “A Clear View” that contain information for those unable to attend last night’s gathering.
