It was a big moment for the Effingham community when the Fayette Avenue underpass was dedicated. Dr. D.A. Niccum and many other people from Effingham helped get completed what was the city’s first grade separation almost 50 years ago.

The Banker Street overpass, the Jaycee Avenue overpass and the Raney Street overpass followed, and eventually it was easier to get around town.

One remaining hindrance, though, is the railroad crossing on South Banker Street next to Village Square Mall. During the brainstorming on the city’s new comprehensive plan, a remedy to the Banker crossing was suggested as an item needing addressed.

At this week’s City Council meeting, Director of Public Works Jeremy Heuerman mentioned starting the project. Heuerman suggested an underpass at the location, but he specifically wants to begin setting money aside to hire a consultant who could start the planning process.

This won’t be a short-term item; Heuerman said typically a grade separation project takes 10 years to complete, but this would be a way to get the ball rolling.
