The American Red Cross is currently facing a severe blood shortage. Hospital requests are exceeding available supplies, and blood products have dropped by about 35 percent over the past month. This shortage is especially critical for platelets and blood types O, A negative, and B negative. These products are used daily to support trauma patients, mothers in childbirth, cancer patients, and individuals living with sickle cell disease.
This winter has created added challenges. The worst flu season in nearly 20 years has sidelined many donors, and extreme winter weather has already impacted hundreds of blood drives nationwide, leaving thousands of donations uncollected. At the same time, hospitals are being forced to carefully triage blood products, which means delays in care can become a real risk without strong donor turnout.
Every appointment helps ensure blood is available on hospital shelves when it’s urgently needed. To help encourage donors, the Red Cross is offering thank-you incentives:
– Donors who give through January 25, are entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LX.
– Donors who give January 26 through February 28, will receive a $20 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice.
