The Mattoon Fire Department was dispatched at 2:46 A.M Wednesday morning to the area of 33rd and Champaign for a possible structure fire.
Crews arrived on scene at 2:50 A.M to find a detached garage behind 3309 Champaign with heavy smoke coming from the structure. The homeowner advised that there were no individuals inside the structure. Crews then pulled a handline to begin extinguishing the fire. Most of the fire was knocked down and contained at 2:55 A.M. Crews then began opening the walls and ceiling to extinguish the remainder of the fire. This fire was considered completely extinguished at 3:34 A.M.
A fire department Investigator began a cause and origin investigation. This fire is considered accidental in nature caused by embers from a wood burning stove. All fire units cleared the scene at 4:01 A.M. No injuries were reported at this incident, and no occupants were displaced.
The Mattoon Fire Department was assisted by: Coles/Moultrie 911 (Ccom), Mattoon Police Department, and Charleston Fire Department.
