Candy Wolff and Chris Mette presented information to the Altamont school board Monday regarding Dolly’s Imagination Library, soon coming to the City of Altamont.

The nationally recognized early literacy program for children five and younger is proven to increase kindergarten readiness and foster a lifelong love of reading. In the beginning stages of securing funds, Wolff and Mette shared that local programs are responsible for funding the cost of the books and mailing for every enrolled child in the area. The State contributes 50% of the total cost. The goal is that every child in Altamont has access to the resource. The Board unanimously passed a resolution to issue up to $3,350,000 in new General Obligation school bonds to complete capital projects. The projects to be funded are drainage and repaving of the high school parking lot, a six-classroom addition to Altamont Grade School with a concessions pavilion, and demolition and new construction of a storage shed located on the south side of the grade school.

Altamont Superintendent Casey Adam shared that the next formal meeting of the district curriculum committee will be held on February 4 to finalize recommendations to the Board. She also shared about the upcoming annual work weekend coming up in February to discuss long-term planning for the district.

In personnel matters, the Altamont board accepted resignations from Doris Zerrusen as 7th grade girls basketball and from Connie Schultz as 8th grade girls basketball coach, employed Kevin Wendling as a sub bus driver, and approved a leave for an unnamed employee.

The Board approved a state maintenance grant that includes remodeling the north men’s restroom at the high school, remodeling classrooms space near the shop at the high school, repair and work on the stairwells of the high school located near the gym, and replacing the LED sign located along Route 40. Superintendent Adam was authorized to place two used school buses out for sealed bids. The Board voted to enter into an agreement with the Regional Office of Education to conduct a superintendent search for $1,000. Superintendent Adam is leaving the district at school year’s end.
