(EFFINGHAM COUNTY CORONER KIM RHODES IS FLANKED BY DEPUTY CORONERS JOEL DETERS AND LAUREN HEUERMAN)
Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes said the process of developing a coroner’s office began when she took office in 2018.
On Wednesday, Rhodes opened the office to local law enforcement and media.
The office is located in the former Pet Feed store at 207 W. St. Anthony Avenue. Rhodes thinks the facility will be fully operational within 30 days.
The hospital morgue could only accommodate three bodies. The new facility will accommodate 13 bodies, and in the event of an emergency, up to 20 people could be accommodated.
Rhodes termed the facility a “fantastic location” with easy access to other law enforcement and emergency services locations.
Asked to describe a typical day in her office, Rhodes said, “Every day is so unpredictable. You don’t know how your day is going to go until the phone rings.”
The coroner’s office has relocated from the third floor of the Effingham County Office Building. That space is to be taken by the Effingham County Airport Commission.
