The proponents of Square Southtown are looking at pivoting to “Plan B” as they wait on the courts to rule on the lawsuit involving Durga Properties and the City of Effingham.

It has been 13 months since the Appellate Court in Mt. Vernon took the case under advisement.

And that’s where things stand.

Meanwhile, the Village Square Mall continues to deteriorate. Hence, Plan B.

One of the developers of Square Southtown, Karen Etter, told the Effingham City Council Tuesday night they plan to focus on the former Rural King and Jubilee Foods buildings with an emphasis on entertainment. Work on those buildings is expected to be completed within 12 to 18 months of taking possession of the Mall.

There is no timetable on when the Court will rule in the suit. The City has taken all of the action it can, and the developers have done what they can do.

Etter, Scott Kabbes and Michael Brummer continue to feel optimistic that some special things can still happen at Square Southtown, but they say waiting too long will hurt them, and will hurt the city.
