Mid-afternoon Tuesday, Fayette County Coroner Dave Harris was contacted by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office to respond to a river bridge east of Vandalia on US 40. A death was reported under the bridge in a so called “encampment”. Upon his arrival, the coroner observed a white male deceased in his tent. The decedent was pronounced deceased at 2:51 p.m. The Vandalia Police Department reported that they had had a recent encounter with this person and believe his identity to be Jeffrey Clay Oller, age 66, formerly of Louisiana.

Even though he has not been positively identified at this time, his body has been transported to Springfield for an autopsy. The Coroner’s Office is awaiting further information from Louisiana authorities but would like to hear from anyone who may have had any contact with him recently. The Coroner’s office number is 618-283-5027.

The Coroner’s office was assisted at the scene by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Vandalia Police Department.
