A Kansas City, Missouri man has been sentenced to three years in prison for theft in Fayette County Circuit Court.
60-year-old Darren Sydnor was arrested in August following a report of a “motorist assist” on I-70 westbound about 10 miles west of St. Elmo. A St. Elmo police officer talked with Sydnor and believed he was being dishonest. Sydnor ran from the officer and attempted to crawl into a water-filled culvert to evade arrest. The officer was able to control Sydnor until Fayette County deputies and Vandalia police arrived to assist.
Authorities were able to determine that Sydnor had just stolen the vehicle he was driving from West Cumberland Road in Brownstown. Sydnor reportedly told authorities the vehicle he had been driving had run out of gas in Brownstown next to the vehicle he was now driving.
The Fayette County sentence will run concurrent with a Missouri case. Sydnor will serve six months mandatory supervised release once out of prison.
