Ken Wohltman is the new president of the Effingham County Airport Commission.
Wohltman was chosen at Wednesday’s meeting to succeed the late Tony Siemer after Siemer’s recent death. Siemer had served more than 50 years on the commission.
The change in leadership comes at a busy time at the airport. A construction project is underway to extend the east-west runway, improve a taxiway, and construct a hangar building.
Commissioners heard that the primary runway is open to 4,500 feet. Airport Manager Jerry Tate said he is starting to see traffic coming back in. That should continue until the project is shut down for the winter. Asphalt is being poured for the taxiway this week.
The floor in the new hangar building is to be sealed.
Work is already underway on a tree survey along the airport property to make sure neighboring properties’ concerns are addressed.
Commissioners plan to market old and new hangar space and an application for aviation fuel tax funds and a grant agreement.
Meanwhile, anyone interested in taking Siemer’s spot on the commission should submit a letter and a resume to the Effingham County Board office on or before 4pm Friday, November 14. Those who apply will be reviewed for nomination by petition and be submitted for selection by the Board at their meeting at 4pm Monday, November 17. The County Board will also accept any petitions of nominees signed by 2% of the voters of the county (490 signatures) to be considered at the Board meeting.
The person appointed will serve the remaining term to expire June 30, 2026.
