The Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation has announced the creation of the Ben Harrington Youth Sports Fund, established in memory of Benjamin “Ben” Cole Harrington of Mattoon. The fund honors Ben’s legacy as both a standout athlete and an extraordinary individual whose love for sports was matched only by his kindness and devotion to others.
A 2011 graduate of Mattoon High School, Ben excelled in football and track, earning All-Conference honors and Honorable Mention All-State in football his senior year. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the Mattoon High School Hall of Fame in 2021. Ben went on to play football at McKendree University before transferring to the University of British Columbia, where he was part of the 2015 Vanier Cup championship team.
Beyond athletics, Ben was known for his bright smile, generous spirit, and unwavering loyalty to family and friends. At the time of his passing in 2020, he was preparing to marry his fiancée, Adriana, and adopt her young daughter, Katalina. His life reflected his belief in the importance of hard work, teamwork, and community. The Ben Harrington Youth Sports Fund will continue that legacy by supporting youth sports programs and helping future generations of athletes experience the same lessons in character, camaraderie, and perseverance that Ben valued so deeply.
