A man is recovering after being struck by a train in Altamont Friday night.
The man…Garrett Foreman…was walking southbound at the foot crossing on the CSX Railroad tracks at Main Street when he was hit by the westbound freight train. Altamont Fire Chief Jon Becker said the incident happened shortly before 7:30pm.
The train stopped across most every crossing in Altamont, leading emergency crews to have to work on the incident from both sides of the train. Becker and a sheriff’s deputy from the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office were able to identify a spot where a helicopter could land to transport Foreman from the scene. Rural Med EMS transported Foreman to the staging area and the helicopter airlifted Foreman to Carle Hospital in Urbana.
Another concern was that Foreman had two children and a dog with him. Volunteers grabbed flashlights and searched the area. It turns out the children went back to the home they had left with their father and were located unharmed.
