One of the longest pending criminal cases in the area concluded Friday in Coles County.

27-year-old Isaac Currey pleaded guilty to a new charge of involuntary manslaughter of a family member in the 2019 death of his infant son at their home in Lerna. The four-month-old was found unresponsive after emergency personnel were called to the home. Some of the initial investigation and interviews in the case were conducted in Altamont, as that’s where authorities located Currey.

Currey was subsequently charged with murder. He was also evaluated as to his fitness to stand trial on the charges, and was found fit. Again, the murder charges were dismissed as part of the negotiated plea reached Friday.

Currey was sentenced to nine years in prison, but will get credit for serving more than a year in custody awaiting disposition of his case. He must also pay a $10,000 fine.
