September is National Emergency Preparedness Month, and Effingham City Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Larry Thies is reminding residents that disasters can strike at any time—and being prepared can make all the difference.
“Disasters don’t wait for the ‘right time,’” said Thies. “They can happen in the middle of the night, during your commute to work, or while your kids are at school. That’s why it’s critical to plan ahead and make sure your family knows what to do.”
Thies emphasizes that preparation is key to keeping your family safe. Depending on the situation, you may be asked to shelter in place or evacuate immediately. A well-thought-out plan helps ensure you’re ready for either scenario.
Key Preparedness Steps:
Evacuation Plan – Identify where you will go, how you will get there, and what you will
take with you. Consider staying with family or friends, or at a hotel if necessary.
Emergency Kit – Stock essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food,
flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, and copies of important documents.
Communication Plan – Make sure every family member knows how to reconnect if
you’re separated. Identify an out-of-town contact to serve as a central point of
communication.
Local Preparedness Resources:
