Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a theft Monday morning. The complaint advised that the suspect had taken property, including two firearms, without permission.
At approximately 4:15 pm Monday, a Clay County deputy on routine patrol located the suspect in a motor vehicle traveling north on Main Street in Clay City. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, at which point the vehicle pulled into a driveway on North 1st SE Street. The driver was taken into custody without incident. Upon searching the vehicle, deputies located spent ammunition casings, ammunition, a loaded magazine and drug paraphernalia. The suspect was transported to the Clay County Jail.
As a result of this investigation, a search was conducted at multiple residences by the sheriff’s office and Clay County Probation Office. Law Enforcement located 27 firearms and several rounds of ammunition.
Michael A. Phillips, 39, of Louisville, who has been previously convicted of a felony charge, was arrested for the offense of Possession of Firearm by a Felon. Phillips appeared in Clay County Court Wednesday and was denied Pretrial Release and is still incarcerated in the Clay County Jail.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Clay County Probation Office and Clay County State’s Attorney Phil Givens and his office.
