Illinois Route 37 and the CN tracks in Alma were closed to traffic for over an hour and a half early Tuesday afternoon after a piece of a grain elevator being dismantled struck a natural gas riser causing a gas line break.

Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says Liberty Gas failed to turn off the gas as requested before the demolition, but the crews doing the work were aware the gas service was still on.

Day says Liberty completed the disconnect after stopping most of the leak.

The elevators were located on a small strip of land between Route 37 and the railroad tracks.

With precautions taken, the gas leak did not end up causing any problems.
