The Effingham City Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday granted one request for a variance, but continued discussion of another request until next month.

The request granted had been submitted by Eric Koester for his property at 1424 Country Avenue, which is in Town and Country Subdivision. The request was to allow a larger accessory building than usual to consolidate three storage places into one.

The other request is from Robin Harris for a lot at 501 West Third Street, the northwest corner of Third and Virginia. Harris is seeking a reduction in the setback from 21 feet down to 16 feet to facilitate construction of a porch on the property. Board members asked City staffers for some additional information, so continued the matter until the August meeting.

There was also discussion regarding regulation of signs. Message boards and billboards, as opposed to business signs was discussed. There was also discussion about basing the size of accessory buildings on the size of the lot. The discussion is all part of the push for a new Comprehensive Plan for Effingham.
