Brownstown school board members Monday voted to abandon their intention to issue bonds that would pay for a school construction project.

The Board placed a Notice of Intent in June for a $7.2 million bond. The funding was to pay for a six-classroom addition between the elementary and the junior-senior high school buildings that would include a breezeway to keep students out of inclement weather.

Brownstown voters since gathered petitions and signatures to request the bond issue on the ballot. That led the Board to last night abandon the intention to issue bonds.

Also Monday, the Brownstown board paid off other outstanding bonds; awarded insurance bids; and approved substitute pay rates, athletic fees, and lunch prices.

The Board hired Fulk Construction to replace doors at the baseball concession stand; approved various employee handbooks; and approved a bus maintenance contract with Ron Zimmer.

Brownstown board members employed Ryan Northrop as a part-time custodian and Deb Hunter as part-time transportation secretary.

A public hearing on the tentative district budget is set for the Board’s September 15 meeting.
