Fire destroyed a machine shed south and east of Mason at 5:30pm Monday.

The building was on the farm of Melvin “Gene” Smith.

Cole Marxman of the Watson Fire Protection District said the building was fully involved in flames when firefighters reached the scene. No one was injured. Several pieces of machinery were in the building…a dozer, backhoe, tractors, and a gravity wagon…along with a large quantity of hay.

Fire companies on hand were from Watson, Edgewood Bi-County, Dieterich, Montrose, Altamont, St. Peter, Sigel, Tri-County from Beecher City, Vandalia, Teutopolis, Effingham, and Shumway. Also assisting were Rural Med EMS, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, and MABAS Air 54.

The last fire company cleared the scene at 10:30pm.
