Effingham County Airport Commission members Wednesday heard that a Notice to Proceed has been received on an extension of the east-west runway at the airport.
County Engineer Greg Koester said that the township road east of the airport has been removed to make way for the extension. The removed materials can be re-used for other projects.
Airport Manager Jerry Tate said equipment is on site and dirt moving should begin soon. Tate said he will close the east-west runway beginning July 21. 360 feet on the east end of the runway will be replaced, then the extension will be constructed. He has been told that the extension will be finished by Thanksgiving.
Also Wednesday, Airport Commission members learned that work should begin in the next several days regarding the new hangar building, and that tree removal is being pursued east of the main runway. Tate said that hangar rent came in the same as the previous month, and that fuel use numbers are up with the return of the Heartland Dental jet. Tate also shared that electrical upgrades made be necessary at the airport.
Effingham City Planner Greg Koester asked Commission members to incorporate airport information into the City Comprehensive Plan being developed. Koester said the Plan is still on the path to being adopted by year’s end.
