Effingham resident Hadley Majors Monday pleaded guilty to a charge of armed robbery for a holdup at Walgreen’s in Effingham last August.

The 37-year-old Majors was sentenced to six years in prison, but was given credit for time served since his arrest. Once out of prison, Majors will be placed on 12 months’ mandatory supervised release.

Counts of aggravated battery, possession of drugs, obstructing a correctional officer, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer were dismissed.

Just before 6pm on August 7th, Effingham City Police were notified of the armed robbery. With the assistance of eyewitnesses and citizens, officers spotted Majors in the Walgreen’s parking lot. After a brief foot pursuit, Majors got in his vehicle and fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

Officers spotted Majors minutes later when he crashed at the intersection of US Route 40 and Outer Belt West. Majors again fled on foot over the railroad tracks in front of a moving train and ran into the woods. A short time later, Majors surrendered to officers and was taken into custody without any further incident. Majors was allegedly armed with a knife during the robbery, which was recovered after his arrest.

Majors is related to an employee of the Effingham County State’s Attorney’s Office, so State’s Attorney Aaron Jones asked for appointment of Fayette County State’s Attorney Brenda Mathis to prosecute the case.
