The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is awarding nearly $1 million in grant funding to librarians throughout Southern Illinois to ensure access to quality resources and programming for nearly 500,000 residents.

Along with the new funding, Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias’ office also championed legislation in the spring to enable the Secretary of State’s office to issue security grants for libraries throughout the state, ensuring their ability to provide a safe environment for patrons, employees and the community.

According to the Secretary of State’s Office, 90 public libraries serving almost half a million people around Southern Illinois will receive almost $750,000. Effingham will receive more than 18 thousand dollars. Other area communities receiving funds are Altamont, Greenup, Herrick, Kinmundy, Neoga, Newton, St. Elmo, Toledo and Windsor.

Meanwhile, four area communities will receive grants for technology enhancements. The communities are Altamont, Herrick, Neoga, and Toledo.
