Fire damaged a home in St. Elmo Wednesday morning and spread to a second structure.
The call came between 5:30am and 6am to the Ed Davis residence in the 900 block of Walnut. The fire began in the front room of the structure, but Doug Engeljohn of the St. Elmo Fire Department said the cause of the fire has not been determined. A State Fire Marshal’s Office representative was called in to help with that issue.
The fire also spread to a neighboring home where there was damage to the roof and some broken windows.
Members of the Davis family were taken to the hospital for examination, and Engeljohn said a firefighter was overcome by the heat and was taken for treatment.
Those assisting at the scene were fire companies from St. Elmo, Brownstown, Tri-County from Beecher City, Altamont, St. Peter, Farina and Effingham, as well as Rural Med and A-1 Ambulance services, and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
