The Effingham County Board Legislative and Personnel Committee Monday agreed to send wind energy and solar energy legislation to the full County Board for consideration at next week’s meeting.
The ordinances would establish fees for siting and applications and would establish setbacks for businesses and even fence heights in an attempt to keep deer out of the fields.
Several counties in the area are trying to wrap up the process. Board Chairman Josh Douthit said area St. Rep. Brad Halbrook shared in a local meeting that the State wants the siting process cleared up.
Board members are trying to make sure they don’t overlook something in the siting process, but some local residents are hoping that a local plan is finalized for when they are approached by someone making an offer on their property.
Board member Jeremy Deters reminded area farmers that once the properties are developed, they won’t be assessed as farmland, but as commercial property, and will be taxed accordingly.
