(JON BECKER’S PARENTS, STEVEN AND ESTHER, LIVE IN THE AREA AND JOINED JON AT WEDNESDAY’S ROTARY MEETING)
Jon Becker had what some would term a dream job.
He worked for the New York Yankees; not throwing curveballs or hitting home runs. Becker, instead, worked as an athletic trainer in the Yankees’ minor league system. He became friends with another trainer, Mike Sole. Even though they both went on to other careers, they stayed in touch and, when Mike became ill and then learned he would need a liver transplant, Jon learned that he was the same blood type as Mike and offered to serve as Mike’s donor. The procedure was successful and both are doing well.
Becker, who now works at Effingham Country Club, served as guest speaker at the Effingham Noon Rotary’s May 21 meeting and talked about his experiences as a liver donor.
Noon Rotary also welcomed a new member. Jordan Peiser serves as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Shumway. He was inducted into the club by Noon Rotary President Andrew Koester.
