The TREC (Trail Recreation Effingham County) Board has voted to proceed with a major expansion of the TREC Trail.
Construction plans and funding were already in place to build a 1,400-foot section of trail near the new 53-acre TREC Nature Park along the Little Wabash River. That would leave 1,200 feet of trail yet to be constructed, in order to complete the planned approximately two-mile trail loop around the nature park.
Board members said that in order to save significant expense and two to three years for the government grant process, they plan to finish the final 1,200 feet of trail at the same time the scheduled 1,400-foot section is completed, and to work to raise private funds, without relying on government co-funding. The Board said such a step would mean that the entire trail loop would be finished and available for use this summer.
Historically, TREC would apply for an Illinois Department of Natural Resources grant that could pay for 80% of the construction cost, with the remaining 20% requiring private funding. That grant process typically takes two to three years from start to project completion. Through private donations, the TREC Board has commitments for around $54,000 of the needed $75,000. The Board is seeking donations for the $21,000 balance. Those wishing to support the trail expansion can make donations made payable to “Trail Recreation Effingham County” and mail the donation to TREC, PO Box 353, Effingham, IL 62401. You can also drop off a donation at the Crossroads Bank location at 2000 South Banker Street in Effingham.
