The National Weather Service is hosting a Spotter Training session on Tuesday, March 18th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This will be at the Effingham County Emergency Operations Center, located at 311 Miracle Avenue in Effingham.

Severe storm spotters are a VITAL part of the severe weather warning process! Spotters provide critical, and potentially lifesaving, information to their communities and surrounding locations – and to National Weather Service forecasters who use these reports to help issue warnings and keep the public updated during severe weather.

The in-person training covers severe weather hazards including thunderstorms and tornadoes, safety concerns, planning for and anticipating severe thunderstorms, general storm structure and movement, and identification of important storm features. New this year are more interactive portions of the sessions.

  • The sessions last about 2 hours.
  • It’s free and open to the public.
  • The class is appropriate for all ages. Ages 10 and up will likely get the most out of the training.
  • Pre-registration is NOT required. Just sign in on the attendance sheets when you arrive.

Residents of any county may attend this NWS class in Effingham.
