County yield averages for corn and soybeans released this month by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service revealed some pleasant surprises in parts of the state and challenges in others from the 2024 harvest.

The annual report released May 6 also contained some major holes as 2024 yield estimates were not published for 40 of Illinois’ 102 counties due to a lack of information. NASS didn’t receive enough survey responses from farmers in more than a third of Illinois counties to publish yield estimates for 2024.

Survey results were available for corn yields in three area counties.

Effingham County saw a yield per acre of 217.5 bushels per acre. Clay County posted an average corn yield of 173 bushels per acre. Cumberland County had the highest bushel per acre corn yield at 226.3 bushels per acre.
