The Teutopolis school district has begun what could end up being a three-phased renovation and expansion project.
Much of the initial work is being done utilizing funds on hand. The work includes renovations in the Teutopolis High School cafeteria, as well as secure office entry upgrades at the high school, the junior high school, and the Unit Office. Asbestos abatement work is also part of the initial project.
All of the initial work is to be completed by the start of the coming school year.
Meanwhile, the district has directed its architect to draft plans for expansion at the junior high school during the spring and summer of 2026. Two options are being explored. One option would be to add three classrooms and a restroom set. The other option would be the addition of two classrooms. The work would allow a relocation of sixth grade classes from the elementary building to the junior high building. Again, the district plans to use money on-hand to pay for the project.
Relocating the sixth grade classes to the junior high building could set the stage for a long-term facility improvement initiative. That work could begin as early as the 2027-2028 school year. That project is still in the development phase, but could include restroom infrastructure upgrades, ADA-accessibility improvements, and modernization of instructional space. This work would require additional funding sources.
The school board heard this week from Steve Adams of PMA Securities, a financial advisory firm specializing in municipal debt analysis. In June, the Board will hear from Tom Crabtree of Stifel, its current brokerage and underwriting firm. The Board will also be collecting community feedback on their vision for future facility projects and the potential need for borrowing to finance the work.
Also at this week’s meeting, Teutopolis board members granted the FFA chapter an okay to attend the state convention; approved the tentative budget for the coming fiscal year with final action in June; and acted on personnel matters. An updated letter of retirement was accepted, along with a leave of absence. The Board extended the contracts of high school principal Tanner Lawson and elementary principal Sherry Hoehn through the 2027-2028 school year. These hirings were approved: Ivy Schmidt for grade school Music teacher, John Westendorf as grade school custodian, Diona Griffy as bus driver, a two-day extended contract for Amanda Hazlett as DO teacher, and high school kitchen student workers.
