Cristine E. “Cris” Sladek, of Long Beach, California, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away on May 7, 2025, in Southern Illinois, at the age of 65.

She was born on December 21, 1959, in Carmichael, California, the daughter of Robert and Marilyn (Bowser) Powell. Cris’s greatest joy in life was becoming a mother and grandmother. Her love for her family was boundless, and she poured her heart into every role she held. She met the love of her life, Rick Sladek, at Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, and they shared 44 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, adventure, and devotion. A lover of animals and country music, Cris could often be found enjoying a concert or planning her next trip — especially if it meant visiting her grandchildren in Illinois and Tennessee. She was always up for an adventure, especially those shared with her lifelong friend, Jean. In her younger years, Cris had the opportunity to travel abroad while her father conducted international business, experiences that shaped her warm and open-hearted view of the world. Cris shared a special bond with her mother, Marilyn Powell, with whom she spoke every night. Their connection was a cornerstone of her life, and a reflection of the deep love Cris carried for her family.

Cris is survived by her devoted husband, Rick; her children, Krista Byers (Jim), Jenna Earnest (Matt), and Michael Sladek (Brandy); her cherished grandchildren, Jack, Charlie, and Grace Byers, Ella Earnest, Gabriel Dillenbeck, Jeremiah Romero, and Joshua Romero; and great-grandson, Hendrix Clements. She is also survived by her mother, Marilyn Powell; her sister, Karin Maligie (John); and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Powell.

Cris will be remembered for her generous heart, her adventurous spirit, and her unwavering love for her family. Her legacy of kindness, warmth, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

In honor of Cris’s love for animals, the family kindly requests that donations be made to your local animal shelter in lieu of flowers. Private family services will be held in California. Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois. The obituary can be viewed and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com.
