The Effingham County Board’s Legislative Committee Monday voted to oppose Illinois House Bill 2827, also known as the Homeschool Bill.

The measure was moving ahead in the Illinois House, but a groundswell of support caused the bill to stall. The measure was never approved in the House and was never considered in the Senate.

The measure is still subject to further consideration, though, so Coral Weber, a homeschool mom from Cumberland County spoke to the committee and asked them to oppose the bill. A large majority of committee members voted Monday to oppose the legislation. The question is expected to be on the full Board agenda at next Monday’s meeting.

Board member Norbert Soltwedel voted against the question. He wondered how the Board would address students that are not getting educated?

The committee also revisited the question of legislation regulating wind and solar plants. There was some sentiment for getting more information before action is taken, but there is also some thought that something needs to be on the books before a developer files a request to develop a plant. The full board will consider the matter next Monday.
