David was born August 29, 1938 in rural Willow Hill, Illinois. the son of John R. and Doris Irene (Burwell) Dhom. He married the love of his life and best friend Shirley Spellbring on May 24th 1958. They were blessed with 68 years of marriage. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, served with the local Fire Department, volunteered as a Cub Scout Cubmaster, and devoted countless years to public service as an Alderman, Zoning Commissioner, and ultimately as Mayor of Newton. David over the years owned and operated a car wash, an apple orchard and a furniture store. He spent most of his life as a floor covering salesman and was known as the Carpet man to his customers and coworkers. He took pride in treating every customer and coworker with respect. He loved spending days fishing, woodworking in his shop, tending his garden, watching an old western, gambling trips and enjoying the outdoors. He also liked a good glass of whiskey, dark beer or wine. One of his most faithful companions was his beloved dog, Henry who was rarely far from his side. Above all else, his greatest joy was his family. He cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Through his example, he taught them the value of hard work, honesty, kindness, faith, and treating every person with dignity. His love was unconditional, his advice was steady, and his presence made everyone feel safe and loved. David left his impression on this world through the way he loved people. He truly never met a stranger. Whether you knew him for a lifetime or met him only once, you were welcomed with a warm smile, a firm handshake, and genuine conversation. His kind heart and generous spirit made everyone feel like family, and he was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The world is better because he was in it. While our hearts are broken by his passing, we are forever grateful for the years we were blessed to share with him. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
David is survived by his wife Shirley. His children Sheila Thomas, Doug (Lana) Dhom, Sharon Koebele and Dip (Audrey) Dhom. His grandchildren Katie (Ben) Repp, Krista (Steve) Whittlesey, Kendra (Ryan) Litteken, Tyson (Dana) Dhom, Melissa (Evan) Semple, Alex (Coartney) Koebele, Whitney (Jake) Probst, Jordan Dhom, Chris Dhom, Cyndel Dhom (Fiancé Clay Mahaney) and his 23 Great Grandchildren.
