CHICAGO — Wednesday should have been renamed Home Run Day at Wrigley Field.
The Chicago Cubs finished with 15 hits in the contest as they pounded San Diego by a 23-3 tally.
Eight of those 15 hits were home runs and Dansby Swanson led the way with three and finished with four RBI. He knocked out a solo shot in the third, a three-run homer in the third and finished with a grand slam in the eighth.
Seiya Suzuki got the Cubs started with a three-run blast in the first inning, his 100th career home run.
Michael Conforto added a single, two home runs and finished with four RBI.
Pete Crow-Armstrong finished with a three-run homer in the eighth and Michael Busch had a solo shot in the eighth.
The Cubs scored the most runs they ever have since 1977.
They have won five straight as they swept the Padres who are now on a five-game losing streak.
Cubs starter Colin Rea gave up only two runs on six hits. Jordan Wicks tossed three innings for his second save.
The Cubs get to rest Thursday before going into a series against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday.
At Atlanta
Ozzie Albies had a double and a solo homer as he guided the Atlanta Braves past the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-1 Wednesday.
The two teams were tied 1-1 in the first inning. St. Louis’s Ivan Herrera doubled and came home on a single by Jordan Walker.
But that was it scoring-wise for the Cardinals as they finished the contest with only two hits and committed two errors.
Meanwhile, Atlanta had six hits led by Ozzie Albies with a double, home run and two RBI.
