The National Weather Service has gathered information on six tornadoes that occurred in our area last Sunday.

Here’s a quick synopsis of the storms:

Another twister occurred at 3:30pm two miles south-southwest of Louisville, just south of Grover Creek Lane. The storm entered the south side of Louisville, removing a large portion of the roof of a business storage building and attached residence. The storm weakened, but re-intensified just northeast of Louisville, where it snapped off power poles and large trees along Old Bible Grove Road. The tornado was an EF1 with estimated peak winds of 100MPH.

A third tornado occurred at 3:41pm about one mile southeast of Neoga, on the east side of I-57. It damaged a few farm outbuildings and trees along its path. The storm was an EF1 with estimated peak winds of 90MPH.

A tornado touched down at 4:07pm two miles south of Newton where it produced EF2 tree damage. The estimated peak winds reached 120MPH. An outbuilding was destroyed and much tree damage resulted along Illinois Route 130.

Another tornado occurred near Newton at 4:15pm. The tornado developed in the area of North 1400th Street near the Embarras River where it destroyed an outbuilding and caused significant tree damage. The EF2 tornado produced estimated peak winds of 115MPH. Numerous very large trees were snapped off and other tree tops were shredded. Corn in the fields was flattened into the ground, with a suction vortice evident down the central path. The tornado had a path of 2.7 miles and grew 300 yards wide.

The last tornado in our area on Sunday occurred later in the day, at 8:07pm. A trained spotter reported a brief tornado touchdown near Tower Hill. No damage was reported.
