The Altamont city council is back at a full number of members.
The Council Monday welcomed John Mefford to fill a vacancy on the five-member panel. Several changes have taken place on the Council in recent months due to resignations.
The Council heard from Damon Simmons, who owns DBS Sanitation Service. Simmons indicated that he plans to sell the business to Steve Stortzum. Council members will vote at their July 13th meeting on approving the change in ownership. Council members also approved a three-year partnership agreement with CEFS Economic Opportunity Corporation. The two parties will share information on city residents who might need help with the cost of utilities.
The Council heard from Chris Overbeck of Global Technical Systems on obtaining a storm siren. The rotating siren would be located in Schmidt Park and would reach all of the city. The Council also approved the installation of an illuminated stop sign at the intersection of Main and Division Streets to heighten awareness of the signs.
Council members amended the ordinance regarding legal counsel for the City to set the pay rate. They also authorized purchase of real property for drainage purposes. The agreement concerns on the Moll property where a drainage easement was updated. The easement off 10th Street is for work designed to lessen flooding. The Council also upgraded the meter reading system for $27,240, and approved a payment to C&C Excavating for $11,100 for tree removal and storm drain installation on Rocket Road at South Point Subdivision. The work is designed to allow a neighboring property owner better access to his property.
Council members approved a three-year contract agreement with the Illinois Council of Police members employed with the Altamont Police Department. The agreement is retroactive to May 1st and includes pay increases of $2/hour the first year and $1.50/hour in each of the following two years. The Council also passed a resolution allowing the Effingham County Fair Parade on August 2nd. A 60-day extension was granted Kieffer Brothers Construction of Mt. Carmel to complete landscaping on its water main replacement project.
